Holly Plotnick, DSW
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Virginia. I received my Masters (MSW) from the University of Denver and my Doctorate (DSW) from Capella University. I have been in practice for 4 years, working in multiple environments, including foster care, inpatient psychiatric therapy, schools, and individual and couples outpatient therapy. I support adolescents and adults in discovering their strengths, partnering with them to meet their goals, and celebrating progress along the way.

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS
VIRTUAL & IN-PERSON SESSIONS
DAYTIME & EVENING APPOINTMENTS
I am passionate about serving adolescents and adults who experience distress from everyday life stressors and struggle to find ways to cope and manage. My clients often feel stuck, overwhelmed, and anxious about things going on in their lives and may be looking for a new path or perspective or need some direction or tools on how to move forward.
In our first session, we’ll start with brief introductions to build a connection. I will ask some basic questions regarding what brought you to therapy and your current perspectives on what you are looking to get from therapy. We will also start developing an initial plan to work through in follow-up sessions.

Having navigated many complex situations in my life, some ending in success and some in failure, I bring different perspectives to my clients and help them accept change as part of life. I show compassion and empathy to my clients to help them identify the causes of their challenges and offer ways to help them move through their journey.
By providing an interactive, laid-back, compassionate, non-judgmental space, I take my clients' lead as experts in their past experiences. I want to help you celebrate progress (small wins). I believe therapy isn’t only about making changes to ourselves but also how we perceive our worth. Successes and failures are normal in this journey, and I celebrate both as progress! I am committed to fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is not only recognized but celebrated.
Depending on my client’s goals, there might be worksheets or journaling-type exercises to help manage negative thoughts or practice new skills between sessions.

I am sharing my journey to acknowledge and demonstrate that everyone's journey is different and their own; there will be successes and failures that all lead to progress, and making meaningful change is hard!
I haven't always been a social worker ... I was born and raised in Central Indiana in a small town from humble beginnings and a strong work ethic. After graduating high school in 1993, I started my journey with the goal of being an elementary school teacher. After 3 years and a student teaching experience, I figured out that wasn’t my path. After many successes and failures, I eventually earned a bachelor of science degree from Purdue University in Computer Engineering in 2001, which led me to a 17-year career as a software developer and project manager with Accenture. During that time, I also migrated from Indiana via Chicago for 2 years before ending up in Northern VA in 2003.
So, how did I become a social worker? I have always felt a connection to helping people, volunteering, and recognizing the inequalities that exist around me (I didn't label it as social work initially), but I realized in 2011 that I wanted to make a change - do something different. It took me a long time to get the courage to make the leap (6 years, to be exact) before I started applying to grad schools. In 2018, I quit my job and started my social work journey; this is when I started to evolve, transform, and discover a new path.
MY JOURNEY
In July 2020 (during COVID-19), I graduated from the University of Denver with my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and completed my Doctor of Social Work (DSW) journey in December 2023.
Since 2020, I have had a number of jobs in the field, including therapeutic foster care, intensive in-home therapy, inpatient and partial hospitalization therapy, and individual therapy.
